The Bigger The Better
Chitose Abe, co-founder of Sacai, brought the big energy (quite literally) to Paris Fashion Week. For their Spring/Summer 2024, the designer has chosen to explore the idea that “the more simple we are, the more complete we become”. The French sculptor Auguste Rodin's remarks were clearly echoed in Sacai's Spring collection. Sacai's runway showcased Abe's mastery in crafting innovative shapes and silhouettes that artfully manipulate the human form, whilst curating movements within the pieces. Notably recognised for her penchant for turning fashion shows into immersive art galleries, Chitose, in a previous season, transformed a car park into a captivating runway for her Autumn/Winter collection.
As soon as the show started, there was this incredible moment of silence. It was like time stood still, and everyone’s attention was instantly captured. We were all captivated by what was happening on the runway.
The brand extended a warm welcome to notable guests, including the accomplished songwriter and producer Pharrell Williams, and the renowned rapper Tyga. The runway was set amidst the unconventional backdrop of a spiralled car park, where the model confidently redefined fashion conventions by striding along the concrete path. Abe skillfully curated a collection that goes beyond the ordinary, delivering a wardrobe filled with striking and daring pieces that make a bold and unforgettable statement.
The styling was a perfect blend of edgy and sophisticated. Karl Temper (who have previously worked for Vogue Italia, Coach and Tommy Hilfiger) known for his incredible fashion sense, brought his A-game to this collection. Temper showcased his talent by mixing different textures, patterns, and silhouettes, creating unique and eye-catching looks. He played with layering, combing oversized pieces with more fitted ones. He brought Abe’s vision to life. Sacai’s makeup artist for the show was Diane Kendal. The makeup perfectly complemented the overall aesthetic of the collection, it was all about enhancing natural beauty and radiance. It was a perfect balance of simplicity and a touch of edginess. Hair was done by Guido Palau, some models rocked sleek, low ponytail that gave a polished and sophisticated touch to their overall look.
The latest collection introduces a recurring motif of circular patterns, skillfully intertwined with soft cocoon and balloon shapes. The innovative array of shapes and silhouettes marks a dynamic start to the year 2024. The designer emphasised her dedication to innovation, stating that her “mission to create something new from the archetype of the garments”. Each silhouette exudes a refreshing crispness, and the garments gracefully embrace a breezy flow, embodying a sense of effortless movement.
The music really matched the energy of the runway show. The beats were infectious, with a mix of electronic and upbeat tunes. The melodies were catchy, and the rhythms were so energetic, setting the perfect pace for the models as they rocked the catwalk. It added an extra layer of excitement and made the whole experience feel even more special. The music and the fashion together created an unforgettable show that had everyone buzzing with excitement!
Abe pointed out that you can play it safe this season by sticking with simplicity without resorting to being monotonous.
